Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for U.S. citizenship through naturalization, you must generally meet these requirements:

  • Be a lawful permanent resident (green card holder)
  • Have maintained permanent resident status for 5 years (or 3 years if married to U.S. citizen)
  • Have been physically present in the U.S. for at least 30 months (or 18 months for spouse of citizen)
  • Demonstrate good moral character
  • Have basic English proficiency (reading, writing, speaking)
  • Pass a civics test on U.S. history and government
  • Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance
